Tom Kastle

Tom Kastle

For years, Tom Kastle traveled the world, collecting and performing maritime songs and stories and captaining sailing ships on the Great Lakes. These days, his passions are even more diverse and include theatrical projects, from Man of La Mancha to Henry IV; film projects, like Francisco Torres’ Delight In the Mountain; and television, where he hosted a short documentary on the Bicentennial Battle of Lake Erie that was nominated for an Emmy Award. Add in musical director and composer credits, writing and performing concert opera narrations, hosting and interpreting nautical events, and being one of the captains of the schooner Denis Sullivan, and you have an artist, and sailor, living a vivid life, indeed!

“What do you say about a guy who can command a tall ship and all her crew, whose songs can make an Irishman cry tears of pure Tullamore Dew?” — Bryan Bowers

“Thank you for being such a creative force behind our entertainment offerings!”  –Sheri Piecuch, Pepsi Tall Ships Chicago

Captain Jack Sparrow

Captain Jack Sparrow

Rumor has it, Captain Jack Sparrow is looking for a new ship and and some crew members. He’ll be wandering the festival grounds stirring up trouble.

Jim Stone & Debbie Robie

Jim Stone & Debbie Robie

The age of sail! Tall ships and taller tales! A time when buccaneers prowled the high seas and “X” always marked the spot. Our earliest memories can be found there: Peter Pan and Captain Hook, Treasure Island and Long John Silver, and for the younger audiences of today Johnny Depp and guy-liner! Those fond recollections of childhood days gone by, or perhaps brand new memories to be cherished for years to come, are returning to the Port Of Duluth at the 2019 Festival Of Sail! And what better way to experience those bygone days of yore than with the youngest mate ever to pilot a ship, Captain Leoknightus Kid! Along with his crew, Rose and Scurvy, they have sailed the Seven Seas and beyond entertaining and educating audiences about life at sea and how, even today, we still use many of the skills and language originated and performed on those wooden decks so long ago. So watch for Captain Kid and his mates as they patrol the harbor side in their ship the HMS Hippocampus looking to impart a little knowledge and lore and a lot of fun and games from their adventures along those Seven Seas! They'll even name them for you; but if you ask the Captain, he'll tell you the Seven Seas are Cookies, Crackers, Cake, Chocolate, Caramel, Chips, and Cheese. Come to think of it, so will Scurvy!

Debbie Robie and Jim Stone are veteran stage and street performers with over forty years of performance and improvisational theater experience between them and have performed at many historical festivals around the country, most notably their 25+ years at The Minnesota Renaissance Festival. In addition Leo, at the tender age of four, has already performed at more Festivals and Events than many children twice his age and knows more Shakespeare than most adults, for which we apologize to him profusely!
